Bathrooms

Inspiration for our main bathroom and ensuite begins with style...

...and ends with colour.

I'm sticking to vibrant colours with this house as I think beiges, taupes and browns are on the verge of extinction.

Well we can hope, can't we?

So first to style.

I love white. Anything white and white everything.

Storage is important, but so too is spaciousness. We only have small spaces to work with as we're wanting to squeeze two bathrooms in, rather than a single large one. To do this we're shifting the current third bedroom.

Isn't this a cute idea? Wardrobe in the bathroom!

We really would have preferred the bathroom to go into the existing kitchen, but we also wanted an ensuite for the main bedroom.

Something had to give.

Our preferred style is classic with a contemporary twist.

Inspired by our foray into colour with our front door, I'm in two minds as to whether we keep the entire house neutral, or splash out, so to speak.

Being that the house was last renovated in the 40s, and the trend for coloured bathrooms was strong at the time, I'm considering bringing those colours into the newer renovation - as a kind of homage to what we're stripping out. Honouring the history of the house, in a way.

GREEN
So first up, the current bathroom is green. When the nephew first saw pics of the pink house, his first reaction was "Eww, I'm not having a bath at your house."

Which is a fair enough response. Buster and I have not used the bath following his advice. The bathroom is actually so old that I refuse to walk in there with bare feet.

Actually our entire house is a no go zone for bare feet. It's just old and run down and hasn't been properly scrubbed in a good while... and there's a fair chance that you could step on a nail or something else equally sharp and unpleasant while we're remodelling.

There is currently a mosaic tile on the floor which would actually be OK if it were in better condition...

...or on the wall.

Did you notice the water damage in front of the shower? The shower, if you can't figure out where it is, is behind the basin. It is a semi solid wall that's lined with vinyl.

Very chic for its time I'd imagine. Just not as chic as this.

Or this.

The layout of the bathroom is not only poor, but the space itself is largely impractical for a bathroom. We did try to rework the space so that we could leave it where it us, but we gave up. Instead we're removing the bathroom to bring more light into the living areas.

The single redeeming feature of the existing bathroom, may be the depth of the bath which we will try to recycle by having it resurfaced. All existing green must go.

Having said that, we could re introduce green in other ways and as much as I panic about only keeping white towels, I'd imagine I could quite easily just live with a bathroom like that last one.

Blue
This is Buster's colour. Anytime he has to choose a gift for me that involves colour, I can guarantee it will be in blue.

I'd imagine that everyone he knows would associate him with the colour blue.

Can you picture him in this bathroom? The bath looks a bit small for him. Sorry I'm sure you don't wish to imagine him in any bath.

Not very masculine, I know, but charming nonetheless. I love oversized windows.

I'm leaning more and more toward white with paint for colour.

Pink
Buster had an apoplexy when I mentioned pink in the bathroom.

I love, love, love pink. It's just such an unusual colour for interiors that it makes you think hmmm....

I wonder if we could pull it off....????
