Laundry

Creating a laundry space in this house has been the most difficult part of the design process, only because I really don't like rooms dedicated to laundry.

I'm of the wash it-fold it-and put it away immediately!!! variety.

Piles of dirty laundry, lead to piles of folding and piles piss me off. That's the short of it.

Like most other people, I'd rather not deal with laundry at all, so to me a European laundry makes perfect sense. Plus I grew up in house that had the laundry in a bifold cupboard - it was fabulous and I remain a fan of the compact laundry.

But having a very small kitchen, combined with living in a cold climate, and the fact that this house is being designed with a family in mind, has resulted in the need for a distinct space dedicated to washing.

If the laundry is large enough to have a potted tree, it's taking up way too much space. Even if the tree is miniature and the house is a mansion.

This is the other side of the same laundry above. There's just so much space it almost makes me cry.

I believe that too much room devoted to laundry can lead to disasters. But that's only because I live with a stasher who will hide something rather than put it in its rightful spot. He thinks to himself, "I'll put this away later" then puts it out of sight in an attempt to rationalise that said object is almost put away, then promptly forgets what he's done. It's quite charming this trait of his.

From my perspective, clean laundry belongs in wardrobes, not in piles. And I don't care how neatly it's folded, it's not considered put away until it's in the wardrobe. Sorry am I still ranting about laundrys? I'll get off my soapbox soon.... I promise.

So from the necessity for a laundry, came the concept of integrated laundry/pantry/skullery and anything else I can squeeze in there, so that I don't have to refer to is as the laundry.

I think we'll call it the room with glass doors. I love these doors, and think they might be suited to our laundry/pantry/skullery space. And the door to outside from this room will also be glass, so it makes perfect sense.

Might also see if I can squeeze an extra window in.
